Backcountry Skiing Equipment List

This equipment list is for individuals participating in a day of backcountry skiing. If you are planning a multi-day ski tour, please contact the office or your guide for a more complete list.

Ski Pack

  • Ski pack 32-45L. The pack should be designed to carry avalanche rescue equipment (Exum can provide.  Be aware that Exum has only limited quantities.  If you are interested, you must notify the office)

 

Rescue Kit

  • Rescue Shovel
  • Probe
  • Beacon/Transceiver
  • Communication Device/Satellite or other

(Exum can provide all of the above, and give instruction on how to use.  Please notify the office if you need any of this gear)

 

Personal Kit

  • Synthetic or wool base layer top and bottom
  • Lightweight fleece or wind shirt
  • Soft shell jacket
  • Soft shell pants
  • Shell jacket (must be waterproof)
  • Shell pants (must be waterproof)
  • Light insulating top – Synthetic or down that can be worn under a shell jacket
  • Mid insulation jacket – Synthetic or down, with a hood that can fit over ALL layers
  • Mid-weight gloves or mittens – these can be worn for skinning or uphill hiking
  • Heavy weight gloves or mittens – for cold or stormy weather
  • Winter hat – Warm – can be wool or synthetic
  • Baseball hat or visor
  • Sunscreen
  • Lip balm
  • Sunglasses
  • Ski goggles
  • 2 liters of water.  We recommend two 32 oz/1 liter water bottles.  HYDRATION BLADDERS FREEZE
  • Food – Please don’t forget your healthy snacks to fuel your day
  • Ski helmet – Optional/user discretion

 

Ski Touring Gear

  • Alpine touring boots that fit your skis
  • Skis with touring bindings
  • Skins that fit your skis – double check!
  • Poles that are adjustable and have backcountry baskets
