Avalanche Level I

Avalanche Level I

For 2022, Exum offers private avalanche courses in partnership with the American Avalanche Institute. The Level 1 course provides a solid foundation in avalanche knowledge and skills.

The course includes two evening sessions and two days in the field.

Evening classroom sessions provide an introduction to the interactions of weather, snowpack, and terrain in producing avalanche hazard.

During field sessions students will dig snow pits, identify snow layers and practice route finding and avalanche rescue. Participants will learn and practice a variety of stability tests that can be done in the backcountry.

Course Dates

The first two days of each course are evening classroom sessions from 6:00-9:00, and the last two days are full days in the field.

Exum is an American Avalanche Institute course provider.
