Skillet Glacier in a Day

Skillet Glacier in a Day

July 8, 2008

Senior Exum Guide, Mark Newcomb and client, Dave Dodson scaled the legendary snow climb Skillet Glacier on Mount Moran in a single day on July 7th. The climb is normally done in two or two and a half days and requires 6,000 plus vertical feet of climbing, most of which is on snow that approaches 50 degrees in pitch. Mt. Moran is a remote mountain massif in the northern end of the range. The approach requires crossing either Leigh Lake or Jackson Lake by canoe or hired shuttle, adding an enjoyable twist to a classic alpine adventure. The peak has a unique flat summit that harbors a remnant cap of sedimentary rock. As climbers top out they step from 2.7 billion years old basement rocks onto 500 million years old Cambrian sedimentary rocks, covering 2 billion years of missing geologic history in one step.
