Matt grew up in Albany, NY and moved west shortly after finishing high school. While pursuing an education in Outdoor Recreation Leadership from Colorado Mountain College, and a BA in Geography from the University of Colorado, he cut his teeth climbing and skiing in the endless mountains of Colorado. Matt has since climbed and guided on the classic peaks of the Northwest such as Mount Rainier and Denali. For five years he sought endless winter, maximizing time spent in a snow covered landscape. He worked as the director of an avalanche program forecasting for a remote mining camp in the central Chilean Andes. Matt grew to love the Latin American culture, their language, and was able to climb and ski in some of the more remote mountains of the Andes including Peru and Bolivia.
In 2015, he returned to the summer climbing season to enjoy more time in the rock and alpine environment. Matt landed a job with Exum Mountain Guides, and happily joined the family of the USA’s first mountain guide service. Matt is an American Mountain Guide Association certified Ski Guide and has completed the Alpine Guide and Rock Guide Courses. Matt spends his winters in Salt Lake City and works as an avalanche forecaster for the Utah Department of Transportation.
