Avalanche Level II

The emphasis in the Level II course is on the interpretation of formal pit profiles which provides an introduction to professional avalanche forecasting.

Classroom sessions begin with a review of Level I topics and move on to an advanced overview of snow metamorphism, the mechanical behavior of the snowpack and standard snow pit profiling formats.

Field sessions concentrate on analysis and documentation of snowpack characteristics on different aspects and crown profiling in the case of recent avalanche activity. The course includes four full days of field work with classroom time.

Sessions will take place in either Grand Teton National Park or in Mail Cabin Creek near Teton Pass depending on conditions. When possible we will use both locations during the course.
