July 15th, 1931 — 80 years ago today, Glenn Exum made the famous first ascent of the Exum Ridge on the Grand Teton. Back then, climbers wore work boots, non-tecnhical clothing and climbed with the rope knotted around their waist.
Between then and now, Exum guides have guided thousands of individuals to the summit of the Grand, following in Glenn’s footsteps.
Today, July 15th we celebrate Glenn’s accomplishment and our 80 years of guiding in the Tetons.
We now have LaSportiva sticky rubber approach shoes, Marmot layers and shells that keep us warm and dry, Mammut dynamic ropes, and Black Diamond harnesses and equipment.
The new technical gear makes the climb a little easier and safer but the climb itself is much the same as it was 80 years ago.
